CHAPTER 11

“Look Len,” said Lucas as he followed his brother to the front gate of their estate, “We should talk.”

“Can you shut up Luke,” said Lenard, “For one. Stop apologizing. I don’t care about Grant. And yeah. The plan’s temporary. But it’s what we’ve got.”

“I disagree,” said Lucas, “I think I can fix them without making it worse.”

“No, I said stop,” said Lenard, “It’s not one or the other.”

“Listen,” said Lucas, “I can fix them. I know there were some adverse consequences, but I know it will work.”

“Luke, shut up and listen to your older, and much smarter brother for once,” said Lenard then he caught Lucas by the arm and twisted him until they were face to face, “I heard you. We are going to fix Lord De’Carlo’s gate. Well first Grant and I need to deal with Lord Stanford. And a logistical issue. Anyway, sit down, shut up, and I’ll come back and get you when we’re ready to go.”

Lucas opened his mouth then shut it and opened it again, “Wait. You’re letting me fix the gates?”

“Yes,” said Lenard.

“Oh, um, what issue?”

“I need to figure out a way to get your damn cannonballs over the wall, through the barrier and shipped to Lord De’Carlo’s,” said Lenard.

Lucas cracked a smile, “Don’t need them. Well, I do. But there are more where we’re going.”

“No,” said Lenard, “We’re going to Lord De’Carlo’s estate. I already checked; he doesn’t have any cannonballs in his arsenal. And we have to start with his gate, or nobody is going to believe we can fix the rest of them.”

“What are you talking about?” asked Lucas, “I already fixed the Stonefallen gate.”

“A remote outpost that nobody’s ever heard of,” said Lenard, “It may have strategy importance, but it effects nothing. We need to fix one of the main gates to get more people talking about it. De’Carlo’s been the most vocal about the mess we’re in. We fix his and word will spread. Hopefully faster than the rumor that we caused it in the first place. I’m guessing that’s courtesy of Creed.”

“I don’t care about rumors,” said Lucas, “But yes I agree. De’Carlo’s gate is first but we don’t need to go to De’Carlo’s estate to fix his gate. We need to go to Aviano training facility. They have plenty of cannonballs.”

Lenard let go of Lucas’s arm and swirled his head, “Fair enough but we’ve still got a problem.”

“What’s that?” asked Lucas.

“It’s nearly three thousand feet from the De’Carlo’s estate to Aviano,” said Lenard.

“And the gates are broken,” said Lucas.

“And the gates are broken,” said Lenard, “We can’t go anywhere except the other estates.”

“Is Captain Sullivan still here?” asked Lucas.

“I think so,” said Lenard, “Why?”

“He’s going to help me get up that mountain,” said Lucas then he started jogging back toward the estate, “I think.”
